Greater Sudbury Police have released the name of the man whose body was found in Junction Creek a year ago.

Owen Paul Ahpay was 44 years old.

Original story:

A year after a man's body was found in Junction Creek the Greater Sudbury Police Service have said they have identified the person as a 44-year-old male who has relatives outside of Ontario.

Police said they are withholding his name at this time out of respect for his family, and to allow for enough time to fully notify all his relatives.

The Criminal Investigations Division is continuing to assist in the coroner’s investigation and further information will be provided in collaboration with the Coroner’s Office, police said.

Police discovered the man's body in Junction Creek on May 2, 2015.

He was described as Aboriginal, with long black hair and a scar on his chin from an old pellet gun wound.

A 12-year-old girl and her father found the man's body in Junction Creek at the intersection of Regent Street and McLeod Street, when they were shooting video of a beaver in the creek.

They alerted police, who then started their investigation to identify him and determine a cause of death.
