OPP recover body of Windsor man who drowned in French River

A 72-year-old man from Windsor has been identified by police as the victim in a drowning on the French River.

Gerard Pitre’s body was recovered July 28 after he he disappeared after going swimming the day before.

The Ontario Provincial Police said the man went swimming around 8:10 p.m. near the dock at a cottage he was renting. Within minutes, he could not be found.

The Nipissing West OPP Marine Unit and the OPP Aviation Services-Helicopter Section searched the waters, but were unsuccessful in locating the missing person.

A post mortem examination has been scheduled. The investigation is ongoing under the direction of the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS). 

Foul play is not suspected.
