OPP shuts down unofficial Saturday night car rally in Wasaga Beach

Out-of-town drivers were stopped and turned away
opp - too small!

Ontario Provincial Police shut down the Town of Wasaga Beach to non-residents Saturday night after large crowds gathered there for an unofficial car rally.
OPP confirmed that roadside spot checks were set up once it became apparent that hundreds of vehicles were rolling into town along with vintage cars and modified performance cars. Police were concerned about the large crowds become a COVID-19 concern
Police confirmed that any drivers that had out-of-town addresses were being turned away from the community.
Local town workers also installed portable speed bumps to discourage drivers from running their vehicles at excessive speeds through town.
OPP officers patrolled the downtown area Saturday night in vehicles and on foot to break up the crowds, local news reports said.
A similar event held earlier in the summer attracted more than 1,000 people near Hamilton. Along with the large numbers of people, police reported excessive noise, fast driving and other unsafe driving actions at that event.
Earlier in the week, Wasaga Beach mayor Nina Bifolchi said the car rally was not welcome and that additional police would be called in to the community to ensure that public safety was maintained.
