The May holiday weekend is the unofficial start of summer.

Sixteen people were killed in traffic collisions and another five lost their lives on the water in the North East Region last year from Victoria Day weekend
to the Labour Day weekend.

Speeding, aggressive driving, non-use of seatbelts or child safety restraints and driving while fatigued are the focus of an OPP operational traffic enforcement plan that will set the tone for safer highway travel this summer.

The main enforcement objective this holiday weekend is to slow traffic down, but officers will take a no nonsense approach to aggressive driving behaviour .

North East Region Traffic and Marine will concentrate enforcement resources on both road and water. Resources have been assigned to Highways 69, 11 and 17.

?The Ontario Provincial Police is on patrol to ensure you and your family remain safe this holiday.? explains OPP Insp. Mark Andrews.

?Our goal is for a fatality free Victoria Day weekend. Please make it your goal too.?
