Fast action by motorists who first came upon a single-vehicle crash on Jan. 3 on Highway 144 saved the life of the driver, who suffered a medical emergency, said the Ontario Provincial Police.

Const. Michelle Coulombe said passersby rushed to the man's help after seeing his vehicle leave the roadway. They had to smash the back window to gain access, and they performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

The driver, a resident of Chelmsford, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Coulombe said the last they heard, he was recovering in intensive care.

Had it not been for the quick thinking of those passersby, the outcome may very well have been much worse, she said.

The OPP has completed their investigation and no charges are being laid.
