A pilot was uninjured after being forced to make an emergency landing on Highway 11 near Nipigon on Jan. 31.

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating after the plane suffered mechanical issues during the flight and had to use the highway as an emergency landing strip. The landing also caused minor damage to the plane, the Ontario Provincial Police said.

Officers with the OPP’s Nipigon detachment were dispatched to the scene just after 5 p.m. on Jan. 31. Although the report was for a crash approximately 20 km passed the junction of Highway 11 and Highway 17 in Nipigon, when officers arrived they found the plane parked in the middle of the highway.

“The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) was notified of the collision,” OPP said. “The plane was safely moved off the highway, and the highway was reopened.”
