Greater Sudbury Police have arrested a man they say is a ?person of interest? in the investigation into the murder of 41-year-old Sean McNamara.

BATEMAN
Police have arrested David Allen Bateman, 37, in connection with the case. Bateman was arrested without incident Tuesday morning on an unrelated matter, say police.

A post-mortem confirmed McNamara died as a result of a single gunshot wound to the stomach and an official police homicide investigation is underway.

McNamara's body was found on Ramsey Lake, not far from the shores near Science North, Sunday morning around 8 am.

Police have also located the 1998 Ford F-150 they were searching for in connection with the case.

Insp. Al Lekun said police issued the information about Bateman being a ?person of interest? in the belief there was a compelling public interest served by informing members of the community about Bateman, who was believed to have been in possession of a handgun.

?In this matter, we feel it is incumbent on us to release this information to the public as part of our continued commitment to safety of the community that we serve,? said Lekun.

Police had attemped to pull over a vehicle they believe was being driven by Bateman Monday afternoon. However, he took off and led police on a brief chase. The chase was called off by police near Moxam's Landing in Walden, when the driver drove his vehicle onto Long Lake, said Staff Sgt. Robert Keetch.

Police called in helicopters to try and track the missing vehicle, but were unsuccessful.

Numerous other police agencies across Ontario were notified about Sudbury police wanting to speak to Bateman and each was given a description of Bateman and the vehicle they were looking for, said Keetch.

A press conference about the case is scheduled for 2:30 pm today at police headquarters.
