Original story:

Greater Sudbury Police are hoping the public can help locate the driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a dog on Notre Dame Avenue last night, and then fled the scene.

At around 10 p.m. on Oct. 5, police were called to the scene of a collision on Notre Dame, just off Lasalle Boulevard.

According to witnesses, police report a white Mitsubishi car was travelling south toward downtown when it struck a large black dog that had gotten loose from its yard and ran across the road.

The collision occurred near the entrance to Pioneer Manor, GSPS reported.

Several witnesses heard the collision and watched the vehicle stop and then accelerate away from the scene.

"The dog collapsed on the road and was safely removed by the witnesses and the dog’s owner," police said. "The dog succumbed to its injuries at the scene."

Extensive damage to the front end of the Mitsubishi could help identify the vehicle. Debris was collected at the scene (pictured above).

"The driver of the motor vehicle did not remain at the scene and did not provide any identifiers or render any assistance or aid to the dog that briefly suffered and then passed away," police said.

Greater Sudbury Police Service hopes the public can help find the vehicle and the driver.
