Police cracking down on driver-pedestrian collisions

In 90 minutes, Greater Sudbury Police Service officers handed out 12 offence notices and eight warning to both pedestrians and drivers Nov. 8 during an enforcement initiative to enhance safety for both.

Officers set up at the intersection of Lasalle Boulevard and Barrydowne Road, which has been identified as the intersection with the highest number of collision within the city. Notices and warnings were handed out to pedestrians for such actions as improper crosswalk use and to drivers for running amber lights.

During the month of November, officers have and will be concentrating on pedestrian safety-related offences throughout Greater Sudbury. This has been prompted as a result of a recent increase in pedestrian-related collisions at intersections, said police in a news release.

Drivers are reminded that they are required to yield the right of way to pedestrians and that running amber and red lights is not only illegal but also potentially dangerous for both themselves and others using the intersection.
