Police: Drunken man on motorcycle was slashing tires

Flees from police, crashes bike, now faces 13 charges

A 20-year-old Sudbury man is facing more than a dozen charges after fleeing police on his motorcycle early Friday morning, before crashing it.

In a news release, Greater Sudbury Police said they were responding to complaints that came in at 6 a.m. from residents in the Second Avenue area of Minnow Lake about a man who was slashing tires in the area.

“The suspect male left the area on a motorcycle and was located by police,” the release said.

“The motorcycle operator sped away upon seeing police and lost control, becoming involved in a single vehicle collision. The suspect, who sustained minor injuries, then attempted to flee the area on foot but was quickly apprehended by responding officers.” 

The man now faces charges that include seven counts of mischief to vehicle and for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. He also refused to give a breath sample. 

The charges include:

  • Seven Criminal Code charges of mischief;
  • Impaired driving; 
  • Refusing to provide a breath sample, also a Criminal Code  charge;
  • Failing to stop and fleeing from police;
  • Driving with a suspended license;
  • Driving with an improper license;
  • Possessing a cancelled, revoked or suspended license;
  • Failing to remain at the scene of an accident;
  • Using a license plate not authorized for the vehicle;
  • Failing to apply for a permit upon becoming the owner of a vehicle;
  • Using a validation sticker not meant for the vehicle;
  • Driving a motor vehicle in contravention of his driver's license conditions; and, 
  • Owning and operating a motor vehicle without valid insurance.

“The accused will appear in video bail court on July 30,” the police news release said. “Any persons with information in relation to this investigation are requested to contact the Greater Sudbury Police Service, 705-675-9171 or Crimestoppers, 1-800-222 – TIPS (8477) or 705-222-TIPS (8477).”
