Police investigating strange package found at Gatchell park

Greater Sudbury Police hope someone in the public can provide information concerning a strange package found in the Byng Tot Lot park in Gatchell on Monday.

Police received a report about the package at 9:15 p.m. Monday night. A member of the public found it partially buried in a sandbox. Police described the package as a small duct-taped cylinder with wires sticking out of it.

They are treating the package as suspicious. 

The Greater Sudbury Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police Explosives Disposal Units  attended the scene and the package was removed without incident, police report.

Examination revealed the device appears to be a small homemade firework. Police say there’s no danger to the public. Officers will be canvassing the neighbourhood for information and potential video surveillance footage of the area or any suspicious activity/people.

Police are asking residents and business owners in the area are asked to check their property for any discarded items that may have been used to construct the device (piping, wire, mesh wire and duct tape) and similar devices. If these items or a similar device are found on your property, please do not touch them. Contact police.

This incident is being investigated by the Greater Sudbury Police Service Criminal Investigations Division.
