A police officer?s future with the Greater Sudbury Police Service will be determined at a Police Services Act tribunal later this year.

Const. Scott Mills, 41, was placed on probation for two years, where he was ordered to abstain from the consumption of alcohol, after pleading guilty to assaulting a woman.

Several other charges were withdrawn after Mills pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of assault.

There were several incidents involving Mills and the woman, said Thomas Fitzgerald, regional director of Crown operations.

All of the incidents began with arguments that escalated into physical contact. One incident involved a phone being thrown by Mills and hitting the woman.

Mills was convicted in 2002 of assaulting another woman. He was granted an absolute discharge in that incident and had returned to active duty before these latest charges were filed.

Mills has sought extensive counselling and treatment for alcohol abuse, said Fitzgerald and defence counsel Andrew Buttazzoni.

Justice Yvon Renaud agreed to the joint submission that Mills be placed on probation for two years, abstain from drinking and continue any counselling
or treatment as recommended by his probation officer.

Mills has been suspended with pay until the tribunal decision. He faces numerous charges under the Police Services Act.

If found guilty at that hearing, Mills could face reprimands ranging from a demotion in rank, to suspension to termination.
