Police have recovered nearly half of the high-strength prescription medications stolen from a doctor's office on Notre Dame Avenue late last month, and have made three arrests tied to the case.

On Thursday, July 28 suspects stole a number of potent medications from a doctor's office on Notre Dame Avenue including: 168 vials of fentanyl, 78 vials of versed, 70 vials of remifentanil and 10 bottles of morphine. Fentanyl and remifentanil are up to 100 times as potent as morphine.

An emergency room physician at Health Sciences North told Sudbury.com the theft was concerning and could add to an already large supply of dangerous opioids on Sudbury's streets.

Police said in a press release Thursday they executed a search warrant at a residence on Nolin Street and charged three adult males with various criminal offences, including possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking; possession of property obtained by crime; and possession of break and enter instruments. In addition, police charged two of the suspects with the break, enter and theft at the physician’s office.

But police said a significant amount of the stolen fentanyl, versed, remifentanil and morphine have not been recovered and can pose a danger to the public when used outside the direction of a qualified physician.
