Police week kicks off with motorcycle demonstrations

A crowd of 50 gathered to watch the GSPS traffic management unit demonstrate their skills

A crowd of about 50 got the chance to learn more about traffic management and see a few Greater Sudbury Police officers on their motorcycles on Sunday, May 14, as a demonstration was held at A&W Canada at 1099 Marcus Drive as part of Police Week festivities.

Police demonstrated their motorcycle skills, gave the community a chance to check out their Traffic Management Unit vehicles and ask questions about the Highway Traffic Act, motorcycle safety and community policing. There were also more than a few selfies.

Police week is celebrated annually during the third week of May and is a chance for the public to learn more about the services provided by Greater Sudbury Police, and to highlight local initiatives and partnerships.

This year’s theme is Building Bridges: Celebrating Police-Community Relationships. The theme highlights the role police officers and personnel play in community safety, “and the vital relationships police have with their communities” reads a release from GSPS.

More events will be happening throughout the week.

On May 15, the official reopening of the Sudbury Region Police Museum at 128 Larch Street takes place from 5-7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and police museum calendars and memorabilia will be available for purchase.

On Tuesday, May 16, you can have coffee with a cop at the Tim Horton’s in Lively, where you can have a chat with the GSPS Rural Unit.

Thursday, May 18, will be an action-packed event, with an Emergency Response Unit and K9 Demonstration happening at the Lionel E. Lalonde Centre in Azilda from 5:30-7:30 p.m. There will also be a explosive disposal unit robot demonstration and a chance to see a bomb suit, as well as a display of tactical equipment and vehicles as well as a high-risk injured party rescue demonstration.

Police Week finishes with a family bike ride at Kivi Park from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 20. Kivi Park is waiving the park fees for those participating. Bring your own bike and helmet, or take advantage of rentals from Adventure 365, who will have a limited supply of bike rentals at a discounted rate. Participants will be required to sign a waiver. The canteen will be open with food available to purchase and all participants can enter a draw for a GSPS swag bag.
