After a day-long trial on Aug. 7, David Popescu was found guilty of promoting hatred, according to local media reports.

Popescu, 61, was charged with two counts of willful promotion of hatred in March, after telling a group of high school students that “homosexuals should be executed” during a federal election debate at Sudbury Secondary School in September 2008.

The man was running in the election as an independent.

He then repeated the comments on a Toronto radio station.

Ontario Court Justice Guy Mahaffy was reportedly unsatisfied with Popescu's claim that he was simply repeating what was written in the Bible. He was given a suspended sentence and 18 months of probation.
