Sagamok man hit with drug trafficking charges twice this summer

Manitoulin Detachment of the OPP stopped the same motor vehicle with the same driver twice this summer. 

The driver was found contravening the Highway Traffic Act, Criminal Code, Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and the Cannabis Control Act 2017 in both instances.

On Aug.31, at approximately 1:04 a.m., OPP officers stopped a vehicle travelling on Highway 17 in Baldwin Township.  

Officers found the driver to be suspended in the Province of Ontario.

Further investigation revealed the driver to be in possession of controlled drugs, and an amount of Canadian currency.  

As a result, a 35-year-old man from Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation, was charged with the following:

  • Driving While Under Suspension(two counts); 
  • Operation While Prohibited
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Other Drugs
  • Drive Vehicle or Boat with Cannabis Readily Available
  • Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
  • Improper Left Turn

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola, on Oct. 21. The vehicle was towed and impounded for 45 days.

On June 8, at approximately 5:47 a.m., the same driver, was investigated in a traffic stop on Highway 6 in Espanola and charged with the following:

  • Driving While Under Suspension (two counts)
  • Operation While Prohibited
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Other Drugs
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Opioid (other than heroin) 
  • Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
  • Drive Vehicle or Boat with Cannabis Readily Available
  • Unlawful Distribution

The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola, on July 29 and the vehicle he was driving was impounded for 45 days. 

He is now scheduled to attend for all matters on Oct. 21.
