Updated Nov. 19 at 10:53 a.m.: A 50-year-old man is facing impaired driving charges following a three-vehicle crash on MR 80 on Monday evening.

The crash, which occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 18 and kept the roadway partially closed until 5 a.m. this morning, happened between Cecile Street and Isabelle Street in Val Caron.

Greater Sudbury Police investigators determined that a Honda travelling south toward Sudbury struck a Kia travelling in the same direction, causing it to spin out of control and into the path of a northbound Mercedes.

"The 35-year-old driver of the Kia was ejected from the vehicle and was rushed to hospital where he remains in critical condition," police said.

The driver of the Mercedes sustained minor injuries in the crash.

When officers spoke with the 50-year-old driver of the Honda, GSPS said the man was showing signs of impairment. Police said a breathalyzer indicated the man had twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood.

He was subsequently arrested and faces charges of operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs causing bodily harm, and driving with over 80mgs of alcohol in his bloodstream causing bodily harm.

Additional charges may be pending, GSPS said.

The man's name is not being released until the information has been sworn to through the court process. The man was released on a promise to appear.

The Traffic Management Unit continues to investigate this incident and anyone with information related to the collision or the driver of the Honda is asked to contact Police at 705-675-9171 or Crime Stoppers at 705-222-8477 (TIPS).
