The case of the mysterious gunshots in downtown Sudbury is closed...at least for now.

Police issued a news release Tuesday saying the origin of a couple of loud bangs near the City Centre Mall on Friday Sept. 7, 2001 remains a mystery and the investigation has been concluded.

Around 9:15 am police received a call that a shot had been fired. Officers got there immediately and heard a second gunshot. They smelled gunpowder and knew it wasn't backfire from a car.

Numerous downtown businesses and stores were evacuated for several hours as uniformed police and members of the combat ready tactical team searched for a shooter.

Around 11 am an arrest was made but the suspect was later released.

Investigators followed up on tips and more than two dozen interviews were conducted.

Although the sounds were synonymous with those of gunshots no physical evidence could be found.
Witnesses could not offer any information to further the investigation.
