The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating circumstances surrounding a serious injury sustained by a 44-year-old man last week in Sudbury.

Preliminary information suggests that at 2:30 a.m. Nov. 16, Greater Sudbury Police Service officers approached a vehicle that was parked behind a store on Marcus Drive. A man was inside the vehicle.

Upon seeing the officers, the man drove away and shortly after struck a shed.

When the man fled on foot, a police officer gave chase and caught up to the man. There was an altercation and the man was arrested.

He was transported to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a serious injury. The nature of that injury was not provided by the SIU.

Two investigators have been assigned to this incident. At this time, one subject officer and four witness officers have been designated.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
