Speeders double the trouble in ?04

Greater Sudbury Police fined 4,426 drivers in 2004 for speeding. Many of these offences took place in areas where police frequently patrol such as Municipal Road 35 and Regional Road 80. The number has almost doubled from 2003.

Eighty-one drivers were charged by police for offences such as drinking and driving.

During the annual RIDE holiday program police checked 8,114 vehicles. They issued 70 12-hour suspensions and 23 impaired charges.

On New Year?s Eve, OPP and Sudbury Police charged two people with impaired driving and handed out six 12-hour licence suspensions.

In one incident, a marked police cruiser was almost hit from behind by a speeding vehicle on Municipal Road 80 near Carol Street. The driver of the vehicle passed the cruiser and hit another vehicle from behind. He was charged with impaired driving and breaching a probation order which prohibited him from drinking.
