Speeding Hwy. 144 driver found to be impaired

A Southern Ontario man has been charged with impaired driving after he was stopped by the OPP on Highway 144 while speeding near Chelmsford May 31.

At 8:50 p.m. Sunday, members of the Nipissing West (Sudbury) Detachment of the OPP stopped a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 144, south of Chelmsford.

Upon speaking with the driver, officers determined the individual had been consuming alcohol and was subsequently arrested.  

As a result of the investigation, the driver, a 34-year-old man from Aylmer, was charged with:  

  • Operation While Impaired - Alcohol and Drugs
  • Operation While Impaired - Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus)
  • Dangerous Operation

The accused was released by way of an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on June 17 in Sudbury.  

The driver was issued a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.  

This charge marks the 25th driver charged under Criminal Impaired Driving Laws in the Nipissing West Detachment area in 2020.
