Striking a guardrail on Highway 17 in Greater Sudbury led to impaired charges for a Powassan driver.

On Dec. 19 at around 11:23 p.m., Nipissing West Ontario Provincial Police detachment officers responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 17, though OPP didn’t specify where the incident occurred.

No one was injured.

“While speaking with the driver, it was determined that the driver was impaired,” OPP said. “The driver was arrested and was transported to the Sudbury OPP Detachment for further testing.”

As a result, a 33-year-old Powassan man was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC

He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Jan. 18, 2023, in Sudbury.

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
