The OPP is reminding pedestrians to pay attention while crossing busy highways after a student was struck on Highway 144 Thursday.
At around 12 p.m. Oct. 10, the OPP responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a 14-year-old student near the intersection of Highway 144 and Edward Avenue in Chelmsford.
The student was assessed by Sudbury Paramedic Services and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The OPP especially issued a reminder to students at Chelmsford Valley District Composite School to pay attention while crossing Highway 144 near Edward Avenue.
They issued a number of tips for pedestrians and drivers:
Pedestrians
- Make eye contact with the driver. Ensure you are seen
- Wear bright, light-coloured clothing or reflective strips, especially in low-light or dark conditions
- Avoid jaywalking
- Obey pedestrian signals and only cross at marked crosswalks and intersections
- Watch for vehicles turning at intersections or backing out of driveway
- Be aware of your surroundings
- Stay off your devices
- Avoid distractions, like texting or wearing earphones
- No horseplay
Drivers
- Pay special attention to pedestrians as you drive
- Always look for pedestrians, especially when turning
- Watch for children/youths across roads or darting out between cars
- Drive slowly and cautiously through school zones, residential areas, or any other area where children/teens could be walking or playing
- Be patient towards pedestrians with disabilities. Youth/seniors need more time to cross
