The OPP is reminding pedestrians to pay attention while crossing busy highways after a student was struck on Highway 144 Thursday.

At around 12 p.m. Oct. 10, the OPP responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a 14-year-old student near the intersection of Highway 144 and Edward Avenue in Chelmsford.

The student was assessed by Sudbury Paramedic Services and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The OPP especially issued a reminder to students at Chelmsford Valley District Composite School to pay attention while crossing Highway 144 near Edward Avenue.

They issued a number of tips for pedestrians and drivers:

Pedestrians

  • Make eye contact with the driver. Ensure you are seen
  • Wear bright, light-coloured clothing or reflective strips, especially in low-light or dark conditions
  • Avoid jaywalking
  • Obey pedestrian signals and only cross at marked crosswalks and intersections
  • Watch for vehicles turning at intersections or backing out of driveway
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Stay off your devices
  • Avoid distractions, like texting or wearing earphones
  • No horseplay

Drivers

  • Pay special attention to pedestrians as you drive
  • Always look for pedestrians, especially when turning
  • Watch for children/youths across roads or darting out between cars
  • Drive slowly and cautiously through school zones, residential areas, or any other area where children/teens could be walking or playing
  • Be patient towards pedestrians with disabilities. Youth/seniors need more time to cross
