A 32-year-old man was charged for impaired boating on Lake Wahnapitae on Saturday, Aug. 19.

Greater Sudbury Police Services were patrolling the lake, when rural community response unit officers conducted a vessel stop on a boat near the sandbanks.

While speaking with the man on the boat, officers detected evidence of impairment. Upon searching the boat, the officers found alcohol.

An approved screening device was administered and the man registered a fail. He was arrested and transported to headquarters where additional breath tests confirmed he had over the legal limit of alcohol in his blood.

The boat has been impounded for seven days and the driver was issued an automatic 90-day licence suspension.

The 32-year old man from Greater Sudbury was charged with impaired operation of a vessel and over 80 mgs of alcohol. He was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to attend court on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

"This is a reminder that in Ontario, your Driver’s Licence will be suspended, above and beyond the initial automatic 90-day suspension, if you are convicted of driving or having care and control of a boat, motorized or not, when your blood-alcohol concentration is more than 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood (0.08)," said a GSPS news release.

"The length of the suspension is based on the number of previous convictions."

Additional information can be found on the Ministry of Transportation Ontario website, www.ontario.ca under the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook.

"The Greater Sudbury Police Service asks you to consider the impact you will have on your community, your family and yourself when you get behind the wheel of a vehicle or vessel when your ability to operate it is impaired," said the release.

"Make the smart choice, never drink and drive."
