Sudbury man caught, charged for contraband cigarettes

A 53-year-old Sudbury man stands accused of selling tobacco without a license after an RCMP investigation turned up contraband cigarettes in his car.

With a search warrant in hand, police searched the man's car, seizing 700 cartons of cigarettes. The cigarettes have a $21,000 street value.

In accordance with the Excise Act, a federal system used to tax alcohol and tobacco products, the man has been charged with being an unlicensed tobacco dealer as well as purchasing and possessing for sale tobacco products without proper packaging and stamps.


School yard graffiti results in 10 arrests

Sudbury police arrested 10 people for spraying graffiti in schoolyards in October.

Six teenage boys between the ages of 16 and 19 were arrested Oct. 5 in connection to graffiti sprayed at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School in Sudbury's south end. The teens have been charged with mischief under $5,000.

On Oct. 31, four boys between the ages of 12 and 14 were also arrested and charged with mischief under $5,000. Police suspect the boys are connected to graffiti found at Felix Richard Catholic School on Lasalle Blvd.

Police say they are focused on reducing the amount of graffiti found within the community, and remind residents that spray painting on public or private buildings is considered mischief and is subject to criminal charges.


Police shut down island grow-op

Police uncovered 41 cannabis marijuana plants, growing equipment and approximately seven ounces of marijuana during a drug raid on Manitoulin Island Thursday.

Police estimate the total value of the marijuana to be around $42,680, while the growing equipment is worth around $5,000.

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) drug enforcement squad, including officers from Greater Sudbury, executed two search warrants in Meldrum Bay.

There have been no arrests, although police are continuing their investigations. One person is currently wanted in the investigation.
