A 55-year-old Sudbury man is dead after the ATV he was riding on broke through the ice during a Good Friday fishing trip on Lake Wolsey, near the hamlet of Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island.

The OPP were called to the scene at around 7:56 a.m. March 29. Daniel Labelle's body was recovered later that day by the OPP's Underwater Search and Recovery Unit, a team of five highly-experienced divers from Gravenhurst, Ont.

Two other men riding on the ATV with Labelle were able to rescue themselves.

The local coroner has been called in to investigate.

Meanwhile, the OPP is cautioning those who choose to venture out onto waterways to “use appropriate caution and to be diligent in the monitoring of changing ice conditions,” as milder tempertatures and water flows beneath the ice are weakening its strength.

This is the second recent incident where a person has gone through the ice on Lake Wolsey. Earlier this week, a snowmobiler went through the ice, but was able to make it to shore safely.
