Sudbury OPP apprehend driver of stolen vehicle after three-car collision

On May 14 at approximately 1:28 p.m., OPP Sudbury-Warren Detachment members responded to reports of a stolen pick-up truck from the Municipality of Markstay-Warren. 

Not long after, OPP located the vehicle travelling westbound on Hwy 17, approaching the City of Greater Sudbury.

Upon entering the city limits, the driver appeared to intentionally drive the stolen vehicle into three other vehicles, which disabled the pick-up truck and allowed police to arrest the suspect. 

According to OPP, no one was injured during the incident. 

As a result of the incident, the 37-year-old driver from Greater Sudbury, was arrested and charged with:

  •     Theft Over $5,000 of a Motor Vehicle contrary to section 334(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC);
  •     Dangerous Operation contrary to section 320.13(1) of the CC;
  •     Flight From Peace Officer contrary to section 320.17 of the CC;
  •     Failure to Stop After Accident contrary to section 320.16(1) of the CC;
  •     Mischief Over $5,000 contrary to section 430(3) of the CC;
  •     Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 contra ry to section 355(a) of the CC;
  •     Operation While Prohibited contrary to section 320.18 of the CC;
  •     Fail to Comply with Probation Order contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC X 3;
  •     Fail to Comply with Recognizance contrary to section 145(3) of the CC X 2;
  •     Possession of a Schedule I Substance contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA); and
  •     Driving While Under Suspension contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) X 2.

The accused was held for a Bail Hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury, Ontario on May 15. He remains in custody with a next court appearance of May 23.

The same accused is being charged by the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP as well as the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) for incidents that occurred on May 12 in Pembroke and May 13 in Greater Sudbury.
