Sudbury police arrived at a residence on November 29 to arrest a man for failing to remain at the scene of an accident; but when they found him hiding in a closet, they found weapons and drugs hiding there as well.
GSPS reports were dispatched to Municipal Road 35 in Greater Sudbury, where a community member reported they were diving west when their vehicle was sideswiped by a sedan and the driver of the sedan refused to pullover.
The community member followed the sedan to “a parking lot on Highway 144 in Chelmsford” and confronted the driver, police report, asking for their driver’s licence and insurance. The driver of the sedan then went inside the residence prior to police arrival.
When officers arrived on the scene, a tenant of the residence allowed the officers to enter and search the residence in which the sedan driver had entered. He was hiding in the closet.
When they placed him under arrest, officers located a bag containing a firearm, magazine, ammunition and a container with what is believed to be crack cocaine.

After finding a weapon, officers conducted a further search of the residence, finding a loaded sawed-off shotgun.
Due to the seizure of the firearm, officers conducted a further search of the residence with the permission of the tenant, locating a loaded, sawed-off shotgun.

The next day, Nov. 30, Detectives from the Major Crime Section of the Criminal Investigation Division executed a search warrant at the residence, and as a result, officers located prohibited ammunition and what is believed to be Fentanyl.
The 36-year-old sedan driver has been charged with:
- Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Failure to stop at the scene of an accident
- Failure to comply with release order, two counts
- Possession of a schedule 1 substance, two counts
- Use plate not authorized for vehicle
- Driving while under suspension
Another man, a 25-year-old from Toronto, has been charged with Possession of Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition and Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition.
Based on the investigation, officers formed reasonable and probable grounds of his knowledge of the firearms and ammunition as he was present in the residential unit when the sedan driver was located and placed under arrest. Both individuals were held in police custody and attended Bail Court on Nov. 30 to answer to the charges.
None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
