Patrols of official snowmachine trails earlier this month led to three local drivers being charged with speeding.

The Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Monday the Jan. 2 charges were laid by officers on the police ATV patrolling the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs trails in Greater Sudbury.

“Snowmobile safety is an important component of the OPP's provincial traffic safety program,” the release said. “The OPP remains committed to ensuring that snowmobiling remains a safe recreational activity in Ontario.”

The OPP collaborates with the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs to provide “safe, enjoyable snowmobiling throughout Ontario,” the release said.

“Travelling on unsafe ice, speed, and alcohol consumption continue to be leading causes in OPP-investigated snowmobile fatalities.”
