Update: Man arrested after standoff with police misidentified

Police won't be releasing information on charges tonight

Updated at 8:35 p.m.

A woman claiming to be a relative of a man arrested this morning in Milnet appears to have pointed the finger at the wrong guy.

Sudbury.com spoke to the woman this morning, and she identified herself as the cousin of the man who had barricaded himself in his home with a number of firearms.

The woman identified the man as Gerry Castonguay, but according to the Greater Sudbury Police Service, that is not the name of the man who was arrested today in Milnet.

"That's just not who it is," said GSPS spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn. "The female spoke to everyone who was at the scene and we're looking at issuing a media release that media outlets who were there were provided with information that was incorrect."

GSPS Staff Sgt. Richard Waugh confirmed that the name given by the woman claiming to be the man's cousin was, in fact, incorrect.

"He (the accused) wasn't able to get to bail court today, so he will appear in court tomorrow," said Waugh. "We'll likely have the name after he is charged."

Sudbury.com will provide an update as soon as information becomes available.

Updated at 4 p.m.: Although police have yet to release his name, the Milnet man involved in a standoff with police that ended peacefully early this afternoon likely faces charges, a GSPS spokesperson has told Sudbury.com.

Kaitlyn Dunn said not only did the adult man surrender to police, but also he was arrested and will likely appear in bail court on Friday morning.

However, while Dunn said the man has likely been charged, she could not release the nature of those charges today. Sudbury.com expects to be able to report on those charges tomorrow morning.
