A Sudbury teacher scheduled to go on trial next month on allegations of having a sexual relationship with a student is facing new sex-related charges involving another student.

Paul Bedard, 38, has been charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation against a second student. He faces the same charges relating to the original complainant when he goes on trial Sept. 27.

Bedard was not in court Wednesday when the new charges were brought forward for the first time. Bedard?s next court appearance on the new charges is Aug. 25. Bedard was charged in May 2002 after police received a complaint from a 15-year-old student.

Bedard, a physical education teacher at St. Benedict?s Catholic Secondary School, has been suspended with pay from the Sudbury Catholic school board, since the charges were filed.

A preliminary hearing on the initial charges was held at in April of 2003. A ban on publication on all evidence was imposed by the presiding judge. After several delays, Bedard?s trial on those charges is scheduled to begin Sept. 27 before a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
