Thief smashes into Pet Save Thrift Store, steals jewelry

Theft cost local animal charity more than $2,000; store cat Josie was fortunately unharmed in incident

Greater Sudbury Police are investigating after a thief smashed through the glass front door of the Pet Save Re'Tail' Thrift Store on Notre Dame Avenue Sept. 17, stealing several pieces of jewelry.

Any funds brought in by the thrift store go towards Pet Save’s animal rescue operations.

Police say that at 5:15 a.m. Sept. 17, “an individual unlawfully entered the establishment by smashing the front door. Once inside the individual took various items from inside before fleeing on foot. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.”

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

More detail about the robbery was shared by Pet Save founder Jill Pessot on the thrift store’s Facebook page.

“This morning at 5:15 am I received a call from our Security Company that our alarm had gone off, signalling broken glass in our Pet Save Thrift Store,” said the post.

“I arrived at the store to find our front door smashed in and the alarm ringing. Greater Sudbury Police arrived and cleared the store for me to enter and check on our resident cat Josie.”

Fortunately, Josie, the store’s elderly resident cat, “although stressed has become a seasoned pro at break ins and retreated to the lower level. She was safe and sound.”

Pessot goes onto say that the locked jewelry cabinet was smashed, and several items were stolen. These include a Harley Davidson ring, a white gold chain with diamond and amethyst, gold earrings, and possibly more items (the store was still confirming its inventory).

With the damage and stolen goods, the break-in has cost Pet Save more than $2,000. “I don't think anyone should get away with stealing from animals,” Pessot wrote.

The incident was caught on the cameras inside and outside of the store, and a video was posted to the thrift store’s Facebook page. You can view that video below:
