A Sudbury man was hit with impaired driving and drug possession charges on May 10 after OPP received a complaint of a vehicle swerving all over the road on Highway 17.

On May 10 at approximately 11:10 a.m., members from the Nipissing West Detachment of the OPP responded to a traffic complaint of a westbound vehicle swerving and travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 17.

Shortly thereafter, officers located and stopped the vehicle on Highway 17 near Lively.

Investigation revealed the driver had been consuming alcohol and was subsequently arrested.

As a result of the investigation, a 38-year-old man from Sudbury was charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired - Alcohol and Drugs
  • Operation While Impaired - Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus)
  • Possession of a Schedule III Substance (Psilocybin)
  • Speeding 1-49 km/h Over Posted Limit
  • Disobey Sign
  • Drive Motor Vehicle with Liquor Readily Available

The accused was released by way of an Appearance Notice and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on May 27 in Sudbury.

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

This charge marks the 20th driver charged under Criminal Impaired Driving Laws in the Nipissing West Detachment area in 2020.

The OPP remains committed to ensuring Ontario roads are safe from alcohol-impaired and drug-impaired drivers.

"Police rely on the public to report crime. Impaired driving is a crime that should be treated no differently," said the OPP in a news release.

"If you suspect that someone is driving or about to drive impaired, call 9-1-1 to report it. Please drive sober."
