Traffic stop results in drug charges for both driver, passenger

West Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police arrested two residents of Spanish Tuesday after what began as a routine traffic stop.

On Nov. 12 around 8:45 p.m., police were conducting radar enforcement when the driver of a speeding motor vehicle was found to be under suspension and both driver and passenger were in possession of suspected controlled substances.

As a result of further investigation the driver, a 40-year-old man from Spanish, has been charged with:

  • Have care or control of a vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available, contrary to Section 12(1) Cannabis Control Act, 2017,
  • Possession property obtained by crime over $5000.00, contrary to Section 354(1)(a) Criminal Code, joint charge with passenger,
  • Possession schedule 1 cocaine contrary to Section 4(1) Controlled Drug and Substance Act, joint charge with passenger,
  • Driving while under suspension X 2, contrary to Section 53(1) Highway Traffic Act (HTA) and
  • Speeding 1 - 49 Km/hr over the posted limit, contrary to Sec 129 HTA.

The passenger, a 30-year-old woman from Spanish was charged with:

  • Possession property obtained by crime over $5000.00, contrary to Section 354(1)(a) Criminal Code, joint charge with the driver,
  • Possession schedule 1 cocaine contrary to Section 4(1) Controlled Drug and Substance Act, joint charge with the driver,
  • Possession schedule 1 cocaine contrary to Section 4(1) Controlled Drug and Substance Act and
  • Possession schedule 1 methamphetamine contrary to Section 4(1) Controlled Drug and Substance Act

Both accused are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound on Dec. 19.
