The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office and Greater Sudbury Police Service are investigating an apartment building fire on Rita Street in Hanmer that caused $100,000 in damage.

The fire has displaced 24 people. Firefighters responded to the call at about 3:30 p.m. The street was closed for several hours to allow officers to investigate.

Four people were injured in the blaze, including a firefighter.

The three-story building contained 16 apartments, although the fire was contained to just one apartment. Both fire and smoke damage is listed as severe.

In its safety message, Greater Sudbury Fire Services said careless smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths.

“Encourage smokers to smoke outside. Never smoke in bed. Use large, deep ashtrays that can't be easily knocked over.”

The Greater Sudbury Police Service and The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office will hold a press conference tomorrow. NorthernLife.ca will be streaming live from the event beginning at 3 p.m. Visit live.northernlife.ca
