Two men facing drugs, weapons charges for Massey incident

A call about an impaired driver in Massey led to the arrest of two men who are not residents of the community on Highway 17 west of Sudbury.

Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police report they were dispatched to the area of Grove Street in Massey just after midnight on June 15 for a possible impaired driver.

Police eventually located the vehicle in question parked outside a residence on Saubles Street East.

Based on the police description, there was some kind of interaction between police, the man in the vehicle and another man who attempted to intervene. Both men wound up arrested.

“Police approached the vehicle and observed an individual sitting in the front passenger seat,” OPP said. “Upon speaking with this individual, police were notified that they were breaching their release order. This person was subsequently arrested. 

“While arresting this individual, police were then approached by a second individual who attempted to intervene. This person was also subsequently arrested.”

OPP said a search of the men and their property turned up suspected cocaine, a dagger-style knife and $16,000 in Canadian currency.

A 25-year-old resident of M'Chigeeng First Nation is charged with:

  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - cocaine
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000

A 28-year-old man from Scarborough is charged with:

  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - cocaine
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Obstruct peace officer

Both accused persons were held in custody for a June 17 bail court appearance.
