Man faces charges

An Oshawa-area man faces several charges after he allegedly stole a vehicle while the owner was clearing ice off his vehicle's windows in the early morning hours Sunday.

While allowing his vehicle to warm and clearing off the windows, the owner was shocked when an unknown man entered his vehicle and took off.

A Greater Sudbury Police officer observed the event and stopped the vehicle and apprehended the male suspect.

The man was charged with impaired driving as well as taking a vehicle without the owner's consent.

The accused claimed he was involved in a practical joke, even though he had never met the vehicle's owner.

The 28-year-old suspect was released and is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Jan. 26.

Police are advising local citizens to be careful when clearing snow and ice from their vehicle windows.

The second male is described as a white male, five foot eleven, 170 pounds, with short, brush cut hair.

Vehicle break-ins

During the past month, there have been numerous thefts from vehicles parked in the upper level of the Rainbow Outlet Centre parking lot.

Thieves have been prying open back doors and reaching in until the door locks release. In some instances, windows have been shattered in the process.

Once inside, the culprits have been taking any items of value they can find.

Vehicle owners are urged to use extra caution and report any suspicious behaviour to police. Officers have and will continue to increase patrols in the area.
