A Sudbury man who caused an accident and then gave the person whose vehicle he hit a false name and address, was given a hefty fine and had his driver?s license suspended for one year Wednesday.

Terrence Dupuis, 52, pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

Court heard Dupuis was leaving a driveway the morning of Feb. 26 when his truck hit an oncoming vehicle on Kathleen Street.

The driver of the vehicle Dupuis struck asked for identification and other information, but Dupuis jotted down a false name and address and took off, court heard.

Police were called to find Dupuis. It was discovered he?d given the other driver his adopted name and a false address and that his vehicle was not insured.

Duty counsel Mike Barnett told the court Dupuis had a good job for the past five years, but had to leave it because he suffers from numerous serious medical problems.

The day of the accident, he was trying to take his truck to sell it to pay for medical expenses, he said.

The minimum penalty for driving without insurance in Canada in $5,000, but judges have discretion to impose more lenient sentences.

Justice Normand Glaude agreed to the $1,000 fine and one-year driving prohibition and warned Dupuis not to ever drive without insurance again.
