Update: two men face weapons charges after Elm St. altercation

After multiple people were involved in an assault, Police now have the building they are believed to be in contained, and asking community members to avoid the area and avoid sharing photos or video of officers

Greater Sudbury Police have arrested two men after reports of multiple people involved in an altercation on Elm Street near Eyre. One person was seen with a knife, and another with a gun, police state in a press release. 

At 8:00 a.m.Dec. 10, officers were dispatched to an assault in progress at Elm Street at Eyre Street and when they arrived on scene, immediately took two people believed to be involved in the altercation into custody. Another person, believed to be in possession of the gun, had entered a residential building on Elm Street at Eyre Street. 

Officers set-up containment of the building and shut down Elm Street at multiple intersections to ensure public and officer safety. Officers assisted individuals not involved in the incident to evacuate the building and secured the residential unit where the involved persons were believed to be hiding.

Two people exited the unit and were taken into police custody.

"Members of our Emergency Response Unit (ERU) and K9 Unit arrived on scene and made entry into the unit taking a fifth person into custody," said the police release. "As a result of the ongoing investigation, three people have been released unconditionally and two people have been charged." 

A 42-year-old man has been charged with: 

  • Pointing Firearm 
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose 
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm 
  • Breach of Release Order 
  • Breach of Probation Order 
  • Breach of Prohibition Order, five counts. 

A second man, 26, has been charged with:

  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Breach of Probation Order

Both individuals will be held in police custody overnight to attend Bail Court Dec. 11,  to answer to the charges.

Their names cannot be released at this time as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process.

Police said this is a targeted incident as the people involved are known to each other. Officers are still present at the building as Detectives from the Major Crime Section of the GSPS Criminal Investigation Division apply for a search warrant.

Update: Dec. 12, 9:06 a.m.

Greater Sudbury police are reporting that officers have made entry into the unit to ensure the safety of those inside and currently have multiple people in custody. The unit has been cleared, but officers will remain on scene.

Police said Elm Street will be open to vehicle traffic shortly. There is no threat to public.

Sudbury Police are responding to an assault involving multiple people, and are reporting via X (formerly Twitter) a heavy police presence in the area of Elm Street, and officers have closed several intersections near Eyre Street and Regent Street.   

GSPS is reporting that officers have a residential building contained, and that the people believed to be involved in the assault are in the building. 

Officers have closed multiple intersections to re-route traffic and community members are asked to stay away from the area and warned not to livestream footage or images of officers.
