Updated: Murder charge laid in connection with downtown stabbing today

Police have not yet identified the victim who may have known the suspect in the case

Updated at 5:05 p.m.: Police in Sudbury said a man is charged with second degree murder in connection with the stabbing incident that occurred during the noon hour in the downtown.

Greater Sudbury Police Service said a man was taken into custody just before 2 p.m. 

It followed an altercation that police say occurred in the area of Lisgar and Larch Streets at about 12:30 p.m. GSPS said officers were told that two men had been involved in a physical altercation and one man was stabbed as a result.

"Officers arrived on scene and located a man who had sustained serious injuries and required immediate medical attention," said a police statement.

"He was transported to hospital by City of Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services where he was unfortunately pronounced deceased by medical professionals. At this time, we do not have a confirmed identity for the man," the statement continued.

Police said they were able to quickly contain the scene and with additional officers patrolling the downtown area, it was determined that a suspect was inside a Lisgar Street apartment unit. 

Police said a 24-year-old man was taken into custody in the incident. Police said the man, whose identity has not yet been revealed, is charged with second degree murder and is being held pending a hearing in bail court on Thursday.  Police said the investigation continues. 

Police also said this is believed to be an isolated incident as it is believed that the involved individuals are known to each other.

Update 2 p.m.

The man believed to be involved in a stabbing in downtown Sudbury has been taken into custody by GSPS. The man, whose identity has not been released by police, sustained serious injuries during the initial altercation.

He has been transported to hospital by Greater Sudbury Paramedics. Police believe this to be an isolated incident as the involved individuals are believed to be known to each other. 

The roadways, including Larch Street between Durham and Minto street, as well as Lisgar from Old City hall lane to Larch, will be open shortly. Officers remain in the area and the investigation is ongoing.

A number of downtown Sudbury roadways are closed at this hour as Greater Sudbury Police investigate a stabbing in the downtown core.

Police say the following roadways are closed: Larch Street between Durham and Minto street, as well as Lisgar from Old City hall lane to Larch.

The public is asked to look for alternate routes.
