Vehicle veers off roadway, killing M'Chigeeng passenger

Police are in the process of investigating a fatal collision that occured on Highway 6 Friday resulting in the death of one M'Chigeeng First Nation passenger. 

Around 2:12 p.m. on Dec. 6, members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police received reports of a single motor vehicle collision on the highway near Lachance Road, south of the Town of Espanola. 

They responded to the call alongside Manitoulin-Sudbury District Emergency Medical Service and the Whitefish Falls/ Willisville Fire Department. 

Further investigation revealed that the vehicle left the roadway for a still unknown reason, resulting in minor injuries for the driver and death for the passenger.

The passenger, 76-year-old Levis Debassige, from M'Chigeeng First Nation, was pronounced dead at the scene.  

The investigation is on-going at this time with the assistance of OPP Technical Collision Investigators.

Highway 6 was closed for several hours, but is now fully re-opened.
