Update: No foul play in deadly Mathew Street fire (Video)

Fire marshal, police continue investigation into deadly blaze that killed 59-year-old resident

Foul play is not suspected in this morning's fire on Mathew Street that claimed the life of a 59-year-old woman, Greater Sudbury Fire Services says.

Platoon chief Andre Giroux told Sudbury.com that the cause of the fire is still being investigated and the Office of the Fire Marshal remains on the scene of the apartment building near the Kingsway.

Updated at 12:19 p.m.: Greater Sudbury Police is reporting the woman who was found deceased following this morning's apartment fire on Mathew Street was a 59-year-old resident of the building.

Her name has not been released.

Greater Sudbury Fire Services report that when they arrived at the building around 5:30 a.m. today (not 5:45 a.m. as earlier reported), they were able to quickly locate and extinguish the fire. The woman's body was found as they searched the building.

Greater Sudbury Police and the Office of the Fire Marshal continue to investigate the cause of the fire.

Seventeen firefighters from three stations responded to the fire at the two-storey, 12-unit apartment building.

The estimated damages at the time are $100,000, the fire service reports. Fire and smoke damage are listed as severe.

Twenty people were evacuated from the building, although only one resident is listed as displaced by the fire.

Greater Sudbury Fire Services confirmed that a woman has died in the early-morning fire at an apartment fire on Mathew Street, off The Kingsway, on March 31.

Greater Sudbury Police, fire and EMS responded to the structure fire around 5:45 a.m. Platoon sergeant André Giroux said firefighters located the woman's body while searching the building. The apartment where the woman was found is on the main floor of the 12-unit building.

The forensic unit, fire marshal and investigators remain on scene.
