Video: Police release video of union building arson

GSPS hopes public can identify the suspect seen in surveillance footage

Greater Sudbury Police have released surveillance footage of a man they believe to be the person who set fire to the LiUNA building on Clinton Avenue in June.

That fire was actually the second to occur at the building in a month.

The first fire happened on May 14 at around 2 a.m. Police say two men, one a getaway driver, set fire to the LiUNA local at 584 Clinton Ave. LiUNA (the Labourers’ International Union of North America) is a union representing construction workers, waste management workers, show service workers and health care workers.

The surveillance video shows a man approaching the rear door of the building with a container of some kind of accelerant, lighting the fire and then running to a getaway vehicle parked a couple of blocks away.

The vehicle is a two-door, dark Pontiac Sunfire that was being operated by a second male individual.

The second fire was on June 6, at approximately 10:50 p.m. This time the suspect poured an accelerant along the front doors of the building and set it on fire.

It is believed that the same man is responsible for both acts. Damage to the building exceeded $80,000.

Despite a possible reward from Crime Stoppers for information leading to the arrest of either suspect, no arrests have been made.

Police have released the surveillance video in hopes someone recognizes the person in the video.
