Woman killed on Hwy. 17

A 60-year-old Coniston woman was killed in an accident that closed down Highway 17 near Coniston Tuesday afternoon.

Members of the Sudbury detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are continuing their investigation into the four-vehicle collision that occurred at the intersection of Highway 17 and Second Avenue in Coniston around 11:20 am.

Police say an eastbound tractor-trailer unit drive by Michael Busch, 44, of Trout Creek, approached the intersection and failed to stop for the red light and struck a mini van driven by Pauline Blais of Coniston.

The tractor-trailer continued east on the highway and passed through the intersection striking two other vehicles that were stopped on the east side of the intersection.

Blais was rushed to hospital and died as a result of her serious injuries.

Busch was not injured in the collision.

The two other drivers, Eve McDonald, 34, or Dunrobin, and Hormidas Savard, 48, of Wahnapitae, each sustained non life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospital by ambulance.

An OPP technical traffic collision inspector attended the scene and officers are continuing their investigation.
Police say charges are pending.
