A mother of two small children was identified as the latest victim of an apparent murder-suicide in the Greater City of Sudbury.

On Friday, May 24, the body of Maria Fitzulak, 26, was found in the basement of her home at 4389 St. Michelle Street in Hanmer. A post-mortem will be conducted today to determine the exact cause of death, but Fitzulak's body showed evidence of blunt force trauma.

Greater Sudbury Police entered Fitzulak's home the morning after her common-law husband was found dead with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot. The body of Michael Gareau, 28, was discovered in a lodge in Gogama on Thursday evening by members of the Ontario Provincial Police.

The two young children of the couple were not at risk as they were staying with relatives at the time.

The investigation is continuing as police try to reconstruct the sequence of events that lead to the tragedy.
