Young motorists face impaired driving charges

Greater Sudbury Police say three young drivers all under age 25 have been charged with impaired driving in the last few weeks.

The first case took place Aug. 23 just after midnight when police stopped a white GMC truck because the driver was speeding on Hwy. 144 in Chelmsford. Police smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath when he spoke and he “was exhibiting signs of alcohol consumption,” police said in a news release.

“A demand was made for the driver to provide a breath sample into an approved screening device. The test resulted in a fail.”

The driver was also in possession of a controlled substance and had open alcohol in the truck. Tests administered at police headquarters revealed the driver was one and half times over the legal limit.

Mathieu Germain, 20, is charged with impaired driving, possession of a controlled substance and trafficking in a controlled substance. He also faces charges under the Liquor Licence Act and Highway Traffic Act. His driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days and his car impounded for seven days.

Two days later, at 2:30 a.m., police were conducting spot checks in the area of Paris and John streets. Police suspected the driver of a 2009 Honda Accord had been drinking, and he subsequently failed a breath test. He was arrested and further tests at police headquarters showed he was one and a half times over the legal limit.

Michael Dominic Milad, 23, is charged with impaired driving. His driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven.
And on Aug. 31 at 12:30 a.m., police were called to an accident in the area of Ramsey Lake Road. A red 2002 Honda Civic had rolled over and the driver was extricated from the vehicle. He tried to run from police, but after a short foot chase, he was caught and “found to be under the influence of alcohol,” the news release said.

He was arrested and further tests found he had two and half times more than the legal limit of alcohol in his blood. David Robert Poulin, 22, is charged with impaired driving and having more than 80 mgs of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. His driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days and the vehicle impounded for seven days.

All three will be required to attend court and answer to the charges. However, the charges have yet to be proven in court, “and all accused individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty,” the release said.
