After a disappointing start to their weekend on the road, the Sudbury Wolves headed to Saginaw on Saturday looking to recoup a Friday night loss.

The Pack broke onto the ice like a force to be reckoned with, establishing a significant lead within the first 20 minutes. Though outshot by the Spirit, the Wolves sharpshooting gave them the edge.

They delivered their final blow in the third period, returning to the win column with a 5-2 final in their favour.

Wolves rookie Nick DeGrazia earned first star in the matchup for delivering his first goal of the season, and one assist, while 2018 OHL Rookie of the Year Quinton Byfield, earned second star.

Sudbury's Owen Gilhula opened the scoring at 1:25 into the first, with assistance from teammates Blake Murray and Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Kalle Loponen. He was followed to the net a little over a minute later by rookie Landon McCallum, who buried his first goal of the season with assistance by DeGrazia.

The two teams went shot-for-shot for the next few minutes until Wolves' Shane Bultika broke through the crowd to deliver what would be the game-winning goal with assistance by Byfield and Kosta Manikis.

Saginaw took their place on the scoreboard at 10:05 through Camaryn Baber's first goal of the season, with assistance by Jake Goldowski and rookie Josh Bloom.

DeGrazia returned to the net as the aggressor with six minutes remaining in play, to deliver Sudbury's insurance goal with assistance from Peter Stratis and rookie Nathan Ribau.

The Wolves moved into the second period up three, with shots on goal 12-10 in favour of Saginaw.

Tensions rose in the second period, resulting in four minutes of penalty time for both teams, but no goals. Unable to build back from their deficit, Saginaw headed into the final frame three goals behind their visitors, despite outshooting the Pack 8-5 in the period.

Spirit's Reilly Webb brought that lead to two, 2:45 into the third period, with assistance by Cole Perfetti and Ethan Cardwell.

Liam Ross delivered the final blow for Sudbury at 14:27, on a short-handed goal assisted by Byfield. Unable to respond, the Saginaw Spirit were defeated 5-2 by their northern rivals.

Just as they had for the last 40 minutes, Saginaw outshot the Wolves 7-3 in the period. Final shots on goal were 27-18 in favour of the Spirit.

The Pack finishes off their weekend by taking on the Windsor Spitfires at the WFCU Centre at 2:05 p.m. today.

The Sudbury Wolves remain first in the Central Division, second in the Eastern Conference and third overall, with nine wins and six losses.
