The Rockhound Bandits were nothing if not methodical Monday evening at the Cambrian Arena, scoring in each and every period in posting a 6-1 win over the Rockhound Roughnecks in Greater Sudbury Lacrosse Association peewee houseleague action.

The Bandits opened with a pair of short-handed goals courtesy of Lucas Howland and Nolan Marion, with both players finding their way back on to the scoresheet later in the game.

In fact, Marion's second of the game increased the lead to 3-0 before Connor Goudreau got the Roughnecks on the board with under a minute to play in the opening period.

Howland added his second midway through the middle frame, with Yanick Loiselle sticking the dagger in the Roughnecks, scoring with just eight seconds showing on the clock for the Bandits.

Howland closed out the offensive festivities, completing his hat trick midway through the third, while goaltender Noah Soucy came up with several key saves for the winners, even if the bulk of the play kept his counterpart at the other end of the rink far busier.

First lured to lacrosse after watching cousins Matt and Nick Marion excel at the sport, 11-year-old Nolan (he turns 12 later this month) was pleased with the play of the Bandits.

"We were passing a lot, and we got to the house quicker and set it up pretty good," noted Marion after the game. "I just think that we were 'into' the game."

While the team returned three players from the Bandits squad of 2013, they also welcomed four complete newcomers to lacrosse this summer.

Now in his fourth year, Marion is among the many veterans of the sport who try and help the rookies along, taking advantage of the pre-game practice time that is provided to all teams early in the season.

"Whenever we would play wall-ball, or pass with a partner, I would always pick out someone that I don't know, so that I could learn what side they shoot on and stuff," Marion explained.

From there, it's a matter of making sure the lacrosse freshman understand the nuances of proper passing or shooting technique.

"Some people say that you always put the opposite foot of which side your stick is on as the target for where you want to shoot," said Marion.

"Wherever you put your foot is where the ball is going."

The game was the second of two peewee encounters at Cambrian on Monday, with the Wings receiving a five-goal effort from Cameron Walker, swatting the Swarm 7-2.

Oliver Smith kicked in a pair of goals for the winners, with Kaleb Muzzi adding a solo marker, while Gianluca Ongaro and Joel Duval replied in a losing cause for the Swarm.

GSLA houseleague action continues through to late June, Monday to Thursday, while the Rockhound rep teams prepare for upcoming tournament play.

Coach Dave Lachance and the Novice Rockhounds open their summer heading to Innisfil on May 23-25, site of the ninth annual Summer Shootout Lacrosse Tournament.
