The Rayside Balfour Canadians closed out their opening weekend of the NOJHL season with a 1-0 shootout win over the Soo Eagles at home Sunday night.

Jett Leishman scored the winner in the seventh round of the shootout to secure the first win on the season for the Canadians.

Goaltender David Bowen was perfect, stopping all 37 shots in regulation with another six saves in overtime. The Unionville native was a perfect 7-for-7 in
the shootout to help secure two points for the Canadians.

Sunday’s win was the first on the season for the Canadians after a pair of losses to the Powassan Voodoos. The Voodoos took game one of the season 3-2 at the Chelmsford Arena Thursday, before defeating the Canadians 11-1 in Powassan on Saturday.

Brady Maltais and Oliver Smith scored for the Canadians Thursday, with Leishman recording the lone tally Saturday.

Thursday’s home opener was a milestone night for rookies Oliver Smith and Nick DeGrazia, who both recorded their first NOJHL points.

The Canadians will look to piece together back-to-back wins as they host the French River Rapids at home Thursday. The Rapids will be looking for their first win of the season, opening the season with a pair of losses against Cochrane, and a 4-1 defeat to the Timmins Rock.
