Laurentian University has chosen Brandon Edwards, former lead assistant coach with the Brock University Badgers, as the new head coach for the Voyageurs basketball program.

The Laurentian University Voyageurs basketball team has a new head coach.

Brandon Edwards took over as the club’s bench boss on June 5. He takes over from long-time head coach Shawn Swords, who moved on this year to become an assistant coach with the Long Island Nets, the G League affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets

Edwards is the 12th head coach in the Voyageurs basketball program’s 62-year history.

“First and foremost, I’m really excited to be joining a great university and community,” Edwards said in a news release announcing his new role. “The Sudbury region loves to support its sports teams and I have seen it first hand as an opposing coach with Brock. When the student body and local community fill the Ben Avery gym, it’s a really tough place to play for other programs because of their excitement, passion and support.”

Edwards was lead assistant coach at Brock for the past four years. The release stated Edwards was “instrumental” in helping guide the Badgers to their first Ontario University Athletics title in 30 years in 2021-2022 season.

Laurentian Athletic Director Peter Hellstrom is pleased to have Edwards at the helm of the team, the release stated.

“I am very excited to have Brandon Edwards join the Laurentian Athletic Department team,” Hellstrom said. “We feel that Brandon’s background and the success that he helped build during his time at Brock are the ideal fit for our program. His connections throughout Ontario and Quebec will help ensure that top-level student-athletes will continue to choose  Laurentian. Brandon was a key figure in Brock’s recent OUA title and we are hoping that that success will follow him to Laurentian.”
